
Liberty VanZandt:
Liberty appears in Season 1 as a typical school geek who is running for secretary. Her run for office allows her to meet and subsequently befriend Ashley Kerwin. Unfortunately, Liberty is subjected to a vicious rumor concerning herself and her math teacher Mr.Armstrong. In the end, it is discovered that Liberty is receiving supplemental instruction for her dyscalculia rather than pursuing an affair with Mr. Armstrong. We are finally made aware of Liberty’s love interest this season: JT. Although the relationship does end up working out in a later season, JT struggles throughout the first season to avoid any and all contact with Liberty.
Season 2
Season 2 documents Liberty’s many attempts to get closer to JT. When an argument erupts between the two, Liberty proceeds to vandalize some lockers making it appear as if JT was involved. Later on, Liberty discovers from Toby that she has jeporadized JT’s stay at Degrassi. She confesses to her wrongdoing and is punished by the school yet applauded by JT. Liberty also seeks assistance this season from passing her sewing class from none other than JT. In the end, Liberty must return the favor by helping JT pass his finals. This only takes place after JT agrees to attend the dance with Liberty.
Season 3
Liberty attempts to rid herself of her attraction to JT by shifting her interest over to Sean. Sean is not the least bit attracted to Liberty but does help in hooking her up with his friend Towerz. The relationship does not endure long.
Season 4
Liberty once again shifts her love interest over to Chris. This sparks jealousy in Emma, which causes the two to go back and forth trying to attain Chris. Liberty’s attraction to JT is rekindled in season 4. When Liberty writes a play about Dracula, JT as head of the drama department take interest in it and decides to use it. However, Mr. Raditch denounces the play claiming it is too violent. JT and Liberty, or just Liberty as it ends up, compose a rebellious song and sing it to Mr. Raditch. Both are assigned detention where JT apologizes and both begin to kiss each other. They become a couple afterwards.
Season 5
Liberty and JT have ill-protected intercourse over the summer which brings about Liberty’s pregnancy. Shortly thereafter, JT breaks up with Liberty after her poor demeanor towards him. When the rekindle their relationship, they debate about what to do with the baby, which ends up being keeping it. Once both build up the courage to inform their family members, they are rudely surprised that they are anything but happy. Since Liberty and JT now need money to raise a baby, JT tackles a few jobs, the last being that of a pharmaceutical drug dealer. JT acknowledges his mistake and tells Jay he wants out of the business. With threats looming over him, JT ingests several pills that land him in the hospital. At the hospital, Liberty severs her ties to him. After Liberty gives birth to her baby boy, she gives him up for adoption. She ends up regretting this, especially after learning that his foster family plans to relocate far away. After turning to alcohol as an outlet to relieve her pain, she is consoled by her brother’s friend Derek who suggests she makes a box of personal items to give to her baby.
Season 6
Liberty develops a hint of jealousy when she discovers that JT asked Mia Jones and her young daughter out on an ice-cream date. Liberty decides to take a childish course of action by telling Mia all of JT’s secrets and denouncing JT’s plans to open a daycare center at Degrassi. JT backfires by reminding her of his constant support of her throughout her pregnancy. During Liberty’s birthday, she has a confrontation with JT where she expresses that she still has feelings for him. He tells her that he no longer has feelings for her but realizes his mistake after talking to Toby. As JT leaves the party to go and tell Liberty his true feelings, he is stabbed by a Lakehurst student while trying to enter his car. Liberty spots the perpetrators running away and finds the injured JT. At the hospital, JT is pronounced dead as a result of a punctured aorta in front of Sean, Emma, Manny, Toby and Liberty. Following JT’s death, Liberty decides to internalize all of her feelings. This ends up creating problems for her and Mia, which Toby attempts to eliminate. Toby and Liberty begin spending time together and decide that a road trip would be appropriate. This roadtrip proves to be anything but successful when Toby’s car breaks down several minutes into the trip. They both share a moment of affection in the car when Toby proceeds to kiss Liberty. Toby ends up apologizing for the kiss amidst heavy pressure from Manny. Liberty accidentally learns of JT’s true feeling for her from Toby but seems unaffected. Liberty finally shows emotion when she cries at JT’s memorial at Degrassi.
Season 7
Liberty has an altercation with Lakehurst student Lucas amidst breaking up a fight between him and Danny. When Lucas makes reference to J.Ts death, Liberty is sent off the edge and begins to fight with him. This fight ends up being ended by Spinner.
