10/06/2005 - Degrassi Movie Filming May 2006

A recent article ran by Macleans.ca, announces that:

Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) is already gearing up for next May, when he'll direct the much-anticipated Degrassi movie -- the climax of his long-running obsession with the classic Canadian TV series (the Red Bank, N.J., native wept the first time he saw Degrassi Junior High).

What this news would mean to a possible season 6 of Degrassi remains to be seen. Since the film wouldn't be released for most likely at least a year after filming, when will the film take place in Degrassi time? Will the plot run completely separate or intertwined with the episodic events? Will the events happen before or after a season 6? And most of all, will there be a season 6 at all?

Now of course, it is very early to be speculating, but there are a few things we do know. CTV and Epitome have already been discussing ideas for a season 6. And as always, the final decision to produce a season hinges on ratings of the previous one. However, if the ratings of the first few episodes of season 5 are any indication of what's to come, matched with proper funding a 6th season is imminent.

In any event, it is clear that the makers of Degrassi have spent much more time dealing with this issue, than we have spent speculating about it. What their plan is will only be revealed in time.
